Ceramides are a group of organic compounds belonging to the sphingolipid family, which make up a key part of intercellular cement in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. Without enough ceramides, the epidermis becomes more permeable, which leads to more transepidermal water loss and less hydration remaining in the epidermis.
